About our Founder & USE LOVE

Erika Smith is a career teacher, a land tender, and an artist.

From teaching to developing and managing youth programming, she has 12 years of experience working with children and families both inside and outside the classroom in a number of American cities including: Los Angeles, Dallas, Forth Worth, New York City, San Juan (Puerto Rico), and most recently Waldorf, Maryland.

Teaching is a joy and a duty for her, and she brings a unique perspective to the craft. Through her journeys, she has learned that there are key universal ingredients required for true learning, and many times formal schooling leaves little space for things like exploration, connection to nature, community connection, and awareness of present and past world affairs. Use Love Group is a space for preferred alternatives when it comes to supplemental educational services. We feature honest, informed, and rarely-represented perspectives in the service of empowering children and communities to be self-directing, self-aware, sovereign entities.

Along with creating space for authentic extra-curricular learning, USE LOVE is committed to creating and promoting sustainable and integrative gardens and green spaces. Ms. Erika and the USE LOVE team develop garden spaces for maximum enjoyment and use… spaces for entire ecosystems to use and love.

She is a certified Master Gardener through the University of Maryland Extension. She has seeded several gardens throughout her journeys, including the “Mothership” garden in King George, Virginia. See more land care work from the past and in progress on the Garden Lights page.
